Unleashing the Economic Development Potential of our Communities
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Unleashing the economic development potential
of our communities will be the theme of an economic
development forum and seminar series that will be staged by
Local Government New Zealand on April 5 and 6.
The forum will be held on April 5 and will feature an opening speech by the Deputy Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Jim Anderton. There will also be contributions from a number of mayors and economic development professionals from around the country.
The purpose of the forum will be to ‘showcase’ examples of successful initiatives already in place and to inspire councils to invest more in economic development initiatives.
Participants will also have the opportunity to attend optional seminars on the morning of 6 April, dealing with funding/partnership issues, developing clusters of industries and measuring the success of economic development initiatives.
Local Government New Zealand President Basil Morrison says anyone with an interest in economic development is welcome to attend, but Local Government New Zealand is especially encouraging local government politicians and staff, and central government officials to attend.
“We warmly invite anyone who is concerned about the prosperity and economic well being of our communities to come along. But I especially hope that my colleagues in local government, and the staff advising them will get behind this forum and come along and be inspired by some of the excellent initiatives already being used in some areas,” he said.
Mr Morrison said Local Government New Zealand will be using the forum to launch its new guidebook to economic development, which sets out a process councils can use to develop the right initiatives for their areas. Copies of this guidebook will be distributed at the forum.
