Illegal Billboard Clamp-Down
21 December 2000
A registration system for new and existing billboards is supported by Auckland City’s Planning and Regulatory Committee and will be recommended for funding next year.
The comprehensive numbering system would minimise the proliferation of illegal billboards around the city and cost about $153,000 to implement.
Existing billboards would be surveyed to determine if they have existing use rights and new billboards would need to comply with the rules before being given a registration number.
Planning and Regulatory chair Cr Juliet Yates says the proposed system would provide certainty for the industry, council and the community and it would be very straightforward to administer once established.
“It is a means by which we can control the number of billboards and clamp-down on those that are illegal,” she said. “A similar system works well in Australia and ours could be modelled along those lines.”
