Consent Approved For Downtown Railway Station
Auckland City Council has successfully obtained resource consent for the construction of a railway station, beneath the former Chief Post Office building in Queen Elizabeth Square.
The decision opens the way to bring trains back to downtown Auckland for the first time in over half a century.
Resource consent was granted by the Auckland Regional Council, at a hearing on December 4, and is subject to conditions. The decision is also subject to the standard appeal period.
Acting Mayor of Auckland City, Dr Bruce Hucker, says the decision is a big step forward for the Council’s transport plans.
“Obtaining the consent is an important stepping stone. Bringing trains back to downtown is one part of the Council’s plan for an integrated transport centre linking rail, buses and ferries, and a station at the foot of Queen Street is crucial to making that happen.
“The decision is great news, and one that just adds to the momentum that this project has established since we decided on a winning design last month for the Waitemata Waterfront area.”
