Christmas Festivities For Otara Kids

Manukau City Council and the Otara community are offering the kids of Otara Santa Claus, sumo games, singing and spot prizes this Christmas.

A free children’s fun day has been organised for Saturday 16 December - running from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm at the Otara Leisure Centre.

Council’s Community Advisor for Otara, Robyn Allpress, says that the event has evolved from the ‘Otara Celebrates Christmas’ day that has been held for the last two years. “The community wanted to do something exciting and different for it’s children, something to make them feel special.

“Christmas can be a stressful time financially for a lot of Otara families, so we hope that this event can help make it fun. This year the Christmas Day is combining with the Otara Leisure Centre’s Fun Day to give the children a fantastic day full of fun and activities.”

There will be cultural performances, aqua activities, a bouncy castle, sumo games, Tug o War, music bands, a DJ, karaoke competition and mini-fire engine rides. There will also be lots of spot prizes and a free BBQ. Santa Claus will make a special early Christmas visit with lollies.

“The day is the result of collaboration between the community, Council and local businesses. Businesses have really supported the event by providing food, drink and prizes, and the local community helps cook food and supervise the activities”, says Robyn.

The last two ‘Otara Celebrates Christmas’ events were very popular, with over 2000 children attending throughout the day.
