HAMPTON PARK RESTORATION
Interested parties are invited to discuss the long awaited development and opening of Hampton Park in East Tamaki at a
public meeting to be held at St Johns Church, beside the park, on 7 December 2000 at 5.30PM.
Hampton Park is situated on one of the last volcanic cones rising above the industrial roofs of East Tamaki. The park
and neighbouring church land make up the remaining 13 ha. of a 160 ha. farm established by Rev Gideon Smales in the late
1850s.
Manukau City Council wants anyone interested in becoming involved with stone walling, specialty fence and gate making,
wood work, early garden plantings, the history of the area, fund raising and more to attend to discuss the recently
adopted landscape concept plan for the Park.
Public input is needed to discuss such aspects as: areas for grazing, conserving and interpreting archaeological sites,
redeveloping the sunken garden as a semi natural glade, replacing the historic plants, and the creation of a
visitors/education centre where stories of the wider area can be told.
Restoration of the reserve has begun with the rebuilding of stone walls, removal of weeds and rubbish, tree care and
fencing however more work is needed to conserve and enhance the area as a quality historic park.
