Manukau Kids Told ‘Reading Is A Picnic’
Manukau City Council Libraries are once again inviting Manukau children and parents to be involved in the Summer Reading Programme ‘Reading is a Picnic’ – He Mahi Ahuareka te Korero Pukapuka from 16 December 2000 – 20 January 2001.
Nearly 500 children successfully completed the programme last year. This year 775 places are available due to increased sponsorship from Auckland International Airport Limited and Wheelers Bookclub. The programme is offered free to Manukau Libraries members.
The Summer Reading Programme aims to interest, encourage and stimulate children to enjoy reading, while encouraging caregivers to become more involved in their children’s reading at home. Fun-filled activities, incentives and a party all make for a programme that combines fun and interest for children while working towards improving childrens’ reading ability.
“Feedback from last year’s programmes told us that a key element in their success was the one-on-one contact the families had with the librarians,” says Linda Bown, Co-ordinator Children’s and Rural Services. ”This helps to build relationships with families that last well after the the end of the programme.”
