Progress On New Mangere Swimming Pool Complex
The planned new indoor heated pool in Mangere is a step closer with the awarding of the first contract on the project to Mainzeal Construction Ltd for $626, 523 excluding GST. The contract is for the first stage of construction of the pool complex, which is due to open in 2001.
It is being built by Manukau City Council and has been budgeted at $7.3 million. However City Manager Colin Dale says it may end up costing less.
The complex will be an integrated multi-purpose facility with a fitness centre, lap pool, learner’s pool, splash pool, sauna, spa pool, and associated facilities. It is being built adjacent to the existing Mangere Recreation Centre and the two buildings are to be linked together when the pool complex opens in 2002.
Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis said it will be a wonderful community asset. “We need these top-notch sports facilities to develop our next generation of sporting stars. And, who knows, it may breed Olympic swimming champions of the future. Why shouldn’t we see a young swimmer from Otara or Mangere standing on the winner’s dais at some future Games?
“I want the young people of Manukau to have the quality of facilities enjoyed by the young champions who excelled in the swimming events at the Olympic Games. But excellent facilities are just one part of the formula. We must also develop talent early and make proper funding available. The new Mangere pool complex is a great start in that direction,” Sir Barry said.
