Liquor Licenses Upsurge In Auckland City

01 November 2000

LIQUOR LICENSES UPSURGE IN AUCKLAND CITY

An increasing number of liquor licenses is being issued throughout Auckland City, especially in the Central Business District and through the Harbour Edge, according to an Auckland District Licensing Agency report.

The report refers to significant development associated with the America’s Cup, including refurbishment of the Viaduct Village and Princes Wharf areas which has added about 30 new licensed premises to the city’s pool.

The register of licensed premises in the Auckland District shows that 1442 licenses were issued in the year ending June 30 this year compared with 1346 as at June 1999, 1249 as at June 1998 and 1164 at the end of June 1997.

In the first quarter of this financial year, 746 licenses were issued as opposed to 594 for the same period last year; an increase of 25 per cent.

Almost 1000 of the 1442 licenses issued in the last financial year were on- licenses, reflecting the trend toward licensed premises such as hotels, taverns and restaurants which have sprung-up along the water edge.

Bring-Your-Own licenses are continuing to trend down, evidence of a change in public demand due to the number of fully licensed premises to choose from and the convenience of having liquor available.

The recent declaration of Eden and Roskill as “wet areas” is another change, although this has impacted mainly in terms of off licenses for supermarkets in the areas.

Auckland’s District Licensing Agency comprises councillors from Auckland City’s Planning and Regulatory committee and is chaired by Cr Juliet Yates.
