The old Theosophical Society Building at 371 Queen Street on the fringe of Myers Park is set to assume a new role as a cabaret/entertainment venue.

Auckland City’s Planning Fixtures Sub-Committee has granted resource consent for additions and alterations to the historic Category Two building, which is scheduled under the District Plan and protected by the Historic Places Trust.

Sub-Committee chair Cr Juliet Yates says important historic features within the building will be preserved as a result of discussions between the Historic Places Trust and Auckland City Council heritage planners.

“In order to protect these features and at the same time meet the needs of the developer, the building will be extended at the rear by 4.5 metres,” she said.

“A manager’s flat and wooden deck will be on the lower level, the former main lecture hall will be used for the theatre space with upper level offices converted to bar and amenities and the unused roof space converted to administration offices.

“The addition will have little effect on shadow or the view to Myers Park because of the existing high trees, which must not be disturbed and the height of the existing Salvation Army building next door.”

Mrs Yates says the old Theosophical Building currently looks derelict and abandoned. “This sympathetic, adaptive re-use of the scheduled building will ensure its conservation and give the site new life,” she said.

“The small but architecturally significant building contributes to the ambience of Queen Street and is enhanced by the splendid trees of Myers Park which surround it. Restoration of the interior will enable patrons to enjoy the historic values.

“By maintaining the present appearance of the building and preserving the heritage features, there will be minimal effects but an old, desolate site will be revitalised."

Mrs Yates says the applicant requires a loading bay and must arrange with the Council, at his cost, for either a relocation of the bus stop or relocation of parking for the disabled to a site which is suitable and convenient for people with disabilities.
