The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Wednesday:

Situation: A high lies just west of the country today and tomorrow. A weak southwest change spreads up the east coast of both islands This afternoon and overnight. Southwesterlies continue to affect most places on Monday with another colder front spreading up the country. Becoming fine to most places on Tuesday as the high pushes a ridge back onto the country. The high dominates again on Wednesday but a westerly flow develops over the lower South Island.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Mostly fine today and tomorrow. Cloudy at times Monday with a few showers possible and southwest winds. Becoming fine on Tuesday and remaining fine on Wednesday.

COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA and TAUPO: Mostly fine today and tomorrow with light winds. Showers and southwesterlies developing on Monday. Mainly fine on Tuesday with southeast winds and remaining fine on Wednesday.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Fine at first today. Cloud and brief coastal showers spread north overnight then clearing tomorrow. Mainly fine on Monday then a period of rain and southerlies working north late in the day. Showers become confined to Gisborne on Tuesday then mostly fine on Wednesday.

WELLINGTON: Mainly fine today. A few brief showers developing overnight with southerly winds then clearing tomorrow morning. Cloudy periods Monday then late rain. Showers clearing on Tuesday. A mix of cloud and fine breaks on Wednesday.

NELSON: Mostly fine today and tomorrow. A few cloudy periods on Monday with late showers and southwesterlies. Becoming fine on Tuesday and remaining fine on Wednesday.

MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Fine at first today. Brief coastal showers and a southwest change spread north this afternoon and evening. Becoming fine tomorrow. Showers and cooler southerlies work north on Monday. Becoming fine on Tuesday and mainly fine Wednesday apart from increasing high cloud in south Canterbury.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: A few showers about Fiordland today but mainly fine further north. Showers south of the glaciers tomorrow with cloudy periods elsewhere. Showers to most places on Monday the becoming fine on Tuesday. Cloud increasing Wednesday with rain developing about Fiordland.

OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Showers about the coast today with cloudy skies inland. Cloud and fine breaks tomorrow with a few showers about the Southland coast becoming widespread after dark. Showers and cold southerlies on Monday with some snow to the ranges. Becoming fine Tuesday then high cloud increasing Wednesday.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Today, a mix of cloud and fine breaks with southwesterlies easing. Showers and southwesterlies redevelop tomorrow and further showers from Monday through until Wednesday with southwesterlies continuing.
