The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Friday:
Situation: A trough and its main front now lies east of the country. A second front, followed by a much colder southerly
outbreak is sweeping the South Island today and should reach Cook Strait about midnight. Colder air should affect the
North Island tomorrow as a ridge spreads onto to the far south from an anticyclone over the Tasman Sea. The high is
expected to move onto the country Wednesday and Thursday before weakening and drifting east Friday. Friday also sees a
strengthening northwest flow over the South Island ahead of a new trough from the west.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAUPO and TAIHAPE: Cloudy periods
today with a few showers. Tomorrow turning colder with showers more becoming more frequent. Snow expected about the
central plateau at night which is likely to affect the Desert Road. During Wednesday showers clearing then fine in most
places Thursday but over the upper North skies rather cloudy at times. Mainly fine Friday.
BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA: Rain areas in the east clearing today and becoming mainly fine elsewhere. Turning showery and
colder tomorrow. Showers clearing Wednesday then fine after that.
WANGANUI and MANAWATU: The odd shower today but fine periods too. Early tomorrow, turning colder with a period of
widespread showers then further showers during the day. Snow to the ranges at night. Showers clearing from the main
ranges Wednesday and becoming fine elsewhere. Mostly fine after that.
WELLINGTON: Cloudy for much of today. Late today colder southerlies developing with rain and snow to the ranges
overnight. Tomorrow cold and showery. During Wednesday showers becoming confined to the eastern hills with fine periods
increasing elsewhere. Fine Thursday. Friday sees increasing northerlies with cloudy periods.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Rain clearing from northern Gisborne today, elsewhere becoming mainly fine.
Overnight colder showery southerlies spreading north with snow to the ranges. Further showery conditions tomorrow.
During Wednesday showers becoming retreating to the coast with fine breaks inland but still cold. Clearing Thursday and
fine on Friday.
NELSON: A few showers until early tomorrow then skies slowly clearing. Fine Wednesday and Thursday. During Friday cloud
increasing but remaining dry.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: A few showers today but long fine periods also. Skies clearing tomorrow and fine
everywhere Wednesday. Cloudy increasing about the fiords Thursday with drizzle developing, elsewhere continuing fine.
Rain in most areas Friday.
MARLBOROUGH, CANTERBURY and OTAGO: Rain and southerlies workingnorth reaching Marlborough by evening. Tonight snow
lowering to near sea level about Otago and Southland and 300 metres in Canterbury. About Marlborough snow likely to 500
metres overnight. During tomorrow snow levels rising with showers retreating to the coast. Fine periods increasing
inland. Mainly fine Wednesday but cloudy areas at times about the coasts. Fine in most places Friday but in the far
south cloudy with drizzle patches about Foveaux Strait and Stewart Island.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Rain easing to showers tomorrow morning then turning much colder with sleet and strong southwesterlies
developing. Wednesday and Thursday sees showers few and far between with winds slowly easing. Cloudy periods Friday and
dry.
