The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Tuesday:
Situation: A shallow trough lies east of the country today as a narrow ridge crosses from the west. Northwesterlies are
expected to develop then strengthen tomorrow as a larger, more active trough approaches from the Tasman Sea. This trough
should gradually cross the country during Sunday and Monday and is followed by a southwest flow. On Tuesday a high in
the Tasman Sea starts to push a ridge onto the South Island.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE,
TAUPO, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Remaining showers clearing today and becoming mainly fine. Fine at first tomorrow then
cloud increasing with late showers in the north and west then rain becoming general Sunday with northwesterlies. Rain
easing to showers Monday, winds turning southwest. Remaining showers clearing on Tuesday with southerly winds.
WELLINGTON: Becoming mostly fine today. Mainly fine tomorrow but some cloud increasing late in the day. Rain developing
early Sunday then further rain on Monday with a cold southerly change. A few showers clearing on Tuesday with southerly
winds.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Becoming fine today and remaining fine tomorrow. High cloud developing on Sunday
with late rain spreading from the ranges. Further rain on Monday with cool southerlies working northward. Showers and
southerlies on Tuesday.
NELSON: Mainly fine today and tomorrow. Late Saturday cloud increasing with showers about the western ranges. A period
of widespread rain Sunday. Rain easing to showers on Monday then clearing. Mostly fine on Tuesday.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Showery today. Tomorrow showers becoming widespread then turning to rain. Sunday sees
main rain areas becoming confined to northern Westland and Buller with showers and fine spells further south. Skies
clearing Monday. Mostly fine on Tuesday.
MARLBOROUGH, CANTERBURY and OTAGO: Cloud and drizzle clearing from the coast today. Mainly fine inland. Fine tomorrow
but high cloud increasing later. During Sunday, rain widespread for a time then easing to showers as colder
southwesterlies spread north. Coastal showers Monday and fine breaks inland. Mainly fine on Tuesday.
SOUTHLAND: Mainly fine today apart from a few cloudy periods near the coast. High cloud tomorrow with rain developing
about the western ranges late in the day. Rain on Sunday then easing to showers with colder southwesterlies, the showers
retreating to the south coast later and fine periods increasing inland. Coastal showers likely again Monday and Tuesday
but mainly fine inland.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Rain at times today easing to a few showers tomorrow. Strengthening northwest winds Sunday with rain
developing. During Monday colder, rain breaking to showers with southwest winds. Showery and cold on Tuesday with
southerly winds.
