The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Monday:
Situation: A shallow trough should lie east of the country early tomorrow as a narrow ridge crosses from the west. Northwesterlies are expected to develop then strengthen during Saturday as a larger, more active trough approaches from the Tasman Sea. This trough should gradually cross the country during Sunday and Monday and is followed by a southwest flow.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, TAUPO, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Rain or showers in most places today. Clearing about Bay of Plenty tomorrow but showers persisting in most other areas. Cloud increasing during Saturday with late showers in the north and west then rain becoming general Sunday with northwesterlies. Rain easing to showers Monday, winds turning southwest.
WELLINGTON: Outbreaks of rain today but a few fine periods also. Tomorrow mainly fine apart from showers in the north. Cloudy Saturday with gusty northerlies and late showers. Rain breaking to showers during Sunday, northerlies easing and turning southerly. Showery southerlies and colder Monday.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: A few showers spreading off the main western ranges today otherwise dry. Fine tomorrow and Saturday. High cloud thickening Sunday, late rain developing about Wairarapa then falls working further north into early Monday with colder southerlies.
NELSON: Showers, some heavy today. Becoming fine early tomorrow. Cloud increasing Saturday with northerlies and late rain in the west. A period of widespread rain Sunday. Showers clearing early Monday then fine.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Showery today, a few thundery falls. Tomorrow cloudy in most places, rain developing about Fiordland later. During Saturday rain becoming widespread with a few heavy falls. Sunday sees main rain areas becoming confined to northern Westland and Buller with showers and fine spells further south. Skies clearing Monday.
MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Outbreaks of rain about the Alps and ranges of Marlborough today with a few falls elsewhere until tonight. Tomorrow dry with increasing high cloud. Rain settling in along the main divide Saturday with falls reaching other places briefly. During Sunday, rain widespread for a time then easing to showers as colder southwesterlies spread north. Coastal showers Monday and fine breaks inland.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Cloudy with a few showers today in the south. Tomorrow rain about the western ranges, skies cloudy further east. Rain spreading to most areas Saturday then early Sunday colder southwesterlies developing with rain easing to showers, the showers retreating to the south coast later and fine periods increasing inland. Coastal showers likely again Monday but mainly fine inland.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Mostly cloudy today. Tomorrow rain at times easing to a few showers early in the weekend. Strengthening northwest winds Sunday with rain developing. During Monday colder, rain breaking to showers with southwest winds.
