The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Thursday.
Situation: A weak trough moves onto the lower South Island today. A low in the Tasman Sea is deepening as it moves
towards the country. Tomorrow the low lies off the South Island west coast with extensive cloud cover to most places. A
frontal system associated with the low crosses the country on Tuesday then the low becomes complex and covers much of
central New Zealand on Wednesday. On Thursday the low lies east of the country and a south to southeast flow affects
most places as a high in the Tasman Sea pushes a ridge onto the lower South Island.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE,
TAUPO, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Fine in most places today. Cloud increasing tomorrow with patchy rain later to western
areas from Northland to Manawatu. Rain to all areas Tuesday then easing to showers from the west. Further showers to
most places on Wednesday and Thursday.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Coastal showers about Gisborne with long fine periods further south. Mainly fine at
first tomorrow then high cloud increasing towards evening. Rain spreading from the west on Tuesday then clearing after
dark. Mainly fine on Wednesday with gusty westerlies. Showers and southerlies developing on Thursday.
WELLINGTON: Mainly fine today. Cloud increasing tomorrow with a few late drizzle patches to the northern suburbs. Rain
on Tuesday then easing to showers later. Showery on Wednesday. A period of rain on Thursday with southerlies developing.
NELSON: Mostly fine today. Cloud increasing tomorrow with late rain. Rain easing to showers on Tuesday. A mix of cloud
and fine breaks on Wednesday with a few showers to western areas. Cloud and fine breaks on Thursday with a few showers
possible.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Patchy rain developing in Fiordland today with cloudy skies elsewhere. Rain at times
tomorrow. Rain easing to showers on Tuesday. A few showers about Buller on Wednesday otherwise mainly fine. Fine on
Thursday.
MARLBOROUGH, CANTERBURY and OTAGO: Mainly fine today. High cloud developing later. Extensive high cloud tomorrow with
rain developing about the Alps. Cloudy on Tuesday with a few showers turning to rain after dark. Outbreaks of rain on
Wednesday. Becoming fine inland on Thursday but showers remain about the coast.
SOUTHLAND: Cloud increasing today with a few showers spreading from the west later. High cloud tomorrow with patchy rain
about the western ranges. Cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday with drizzle patches about the coast. Showers and cool
southerlies on Thursday.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Showery today. Cloud and fine breaks tomorrow. Rain developing late Tuesday with freshening
northerlies. Periods of rain Wednesday and Thursday.
