All Districts forecast from Weather Workshop:
The Situation: A weak cold front should move off the upper North
Island this afternoon. A second cold front, followed by a very
cold, showery south to southwest flow is sweeping the South
Island and is expected to reach the lower North Island around
the middle of the day then move further north in the afternoon
and evening.
And now the forecast to midnight tonight:
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA,
WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE and TAUPO:
Showers becoming more frequent during the day with hail likely
south of Auckland tonight. Becoming much colder. Snow expected
to 900 metres about the central plateau from evening which
includes the Desert Road. Southwest winds turning more southerly
after dark.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Cold southwesterlies spreading
north today bringing showers of rain and hail. Snow lowering about
the ranges from evening.
WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Becoming showery and colder with snow to
the eastern ranges later in the day. Westerlies turning southerly
this afternoon.
WELLINGTON: Southerly winds developing this morning and turning much
colder with frequent showers. Some hail likely. Snow lowering to 500
metres tonight about the ranges which includes the Rimutaka Hill
road. Expect some sleet after dark to the higher suburbs.
ranges from evening.
NELSON: Brief rain or showers clearing this morning then fine and
frosty. Showers may persist about the eastern ranges.
MARLBOROUGH: Cold showery southerlies soon becoming general.
Snow likely to the main ranges to 400 metres from evening.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: A mainly fine frosty day ahead after
the clearance of brief showers before dawn. Southerly winds.
CANTERBURY: Very cold and showery with south to southwest winds.
Expect wintry showers with hail and sleet. Snow lowering to 200
metres from afternoon.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Wintry showers instore today with very cold
south to southwest winds. Snow to 200 metres and sleet to sea level
over much of Southland and south Otago.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: A cloudy rainy day with southerlies dying out
and winds turning northeast this afternoon.
THE OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Continuing showery over much of the
country with further snow to low levels but increasing fine periods
expected in the north and west of the North Island. Also fine and
frosty along the west coast of the South Island. At the Chathams,
Wintry showers with very cold southerlies developing.
