All Districts forecast from Weather Workshop:
The Situation: A large complex low pressure system in the north
Tasman Sea is drifting southeast. An associated frontal band over
the upper North Island is moving slowly south and a weakening high
pressure ridge covers southern New Zealand.
And now the forecast to midnight tonight:
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND and COROMANDEL PENINSULA: Rain this morning with
a few brief heavy falls. During the afternoon skies breaking from the
north with rain easing to showers and increasing fine periods. Gale northeasterlies in exposed places easing this afternoon and turning
more northerly.
BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA: Rain becoming widespread this afternoon with
a few heavy falls in the west. After dark rain gradually easing to
showers and fine periods. Gusty northeast winds for much of the day.
WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI and TAUPO: Rain setting in
about Waikato this morning and gradually spreading south. North to
northeast winds becoming brisk.
GISBORNE: Rain becoming widespread this afternoon with heavy falls
possible about the main northern ranges. Northeast winds becoming
gusty.
TAIHAPE, WANGANUI, MANAWATU, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: High
cloud thickening but it should remain dry in most places. About
Hawkes Bay and Taihape scattered rain likely by evening and a
few patchy falls further south tonight. North to northeast
winds but southeasterlies about Manawatu.
WELLINGTON: Cloud increasing but remaining dry until evening. Patchy
rain likely after dark. Southeasterlies freshening this afternoon.
NELSON: Cloudy with drizzly rain developing towards evening. Mostly
light winds.
MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Cloud increasing. Patchy rain developing
and spreading as far south as Banks Peninsula by late evening.
Northeast winds.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Fine apart from high cloudiness.
Light winds.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Fine inland apart from scattered high cloud.
Rather cloudy in coastal areas, expect drizzle about eastern Otago
and a few light showers about the south coast and Stewart Island.
Light winds.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Showers clearing this morning but skies remaining
cloudy. Southwest winds easing.
THE OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Cloudy over much of the country with
showers or rain in many places. At the Chathams, rain setting
in with strengthening northeast winds.
