Enforced disappearances: UN expert group to review 420 cases from 36 countries
GENEVA (10 May 2019) – The United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances will hold its 118th session in Geneva from 13 to 22 May 2019 to examine 420 cases from 36 countries.
The Group - composed of five independent human rights experts - will also meet relatives of those who have disappeared, State authorities from different countries, civil society representatives and other stakeholders to exchange information on individual cases and on the persistent practice of the phenomenon of enforced disappearances.
The experts will discuss the reports to be presented at the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council in September, including the next thematic report intended to provide States with concrete tools for the implementation of the obligation to investigate disappearances effectively, exhaustively and impartially.
The Working Group will, in addition, discuss internal matters and future activities, including its planned visits for 2019. The experts will also examine allegations received regarding obstacles encountered in the implementation of the Declaration on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
The Working Group’s meetings are held in private.
