Auckland Resettled Investigating Australian Refugee Programmes
Auckland Resettled Community Coalition General Manager, Abann Kamyay Ajak Yor, has been awarded The New Zealand Winston Churchill Memorial Trust scholarship, investigating resettled communities’ issues in Melbourne and Sydney, with a special focus on employment and housing.
“I hope to learn more about the resettled process in Australia, and how have those of refugee background been welcomed and made to feel at home there” said Mr Yor.
During his stay in Australia, Mr Yor will be meeting newcomers, members of resettled communities, NGO’s, and numerous government agencies. This study visit will provide ARCC with ability to benchmark the refugee resettlement programme in New Zealand with that of Australia. Mr Yor’s focus will be the role of NGO sector and the government agencies in the resettlement process, with a particular attention to employment and housing.
Mr Yor explained that this study is from a community perspective, exploring if or how, can we improve policies and programmes for new settlers of refugee background coming to New Zealand, including their integration into the wider community.
