New Documentary Film to Shed Light on Human Stories Inside the World’s Largest Refugee Camp
For Immediate Release
A film about long term displaced refugees is set to premiere worldwide on World Refugee Day (June 20th).
Life is My Movie, the production company behind the documentary say the film is in the final stages of post production.
At a time when the word “refugee” brings up feelings of sadness, compassion, and even fear, Warehoused strives to bring a human face to the very real plight of refugees in our world today. Filmmakers Vincent Vittorio and Asher Emmanuel travelled into Dadaab, Kenya -- the largest refugee camp in the world -- to give a voice to those that have so long been voiceless. Dadaab was built in 1991 as a safe haven for those from Somalia, Ethiopia, and Sudan who were fleeing bloody wars in their home countries. Now over 25 years later the camp still stands, with its population at times reaching more than half a million refugees.
Warehoused follows the story of one man, Liban, a Somali national who has been inside the walls of Dadaab for over 20 years. With his family already resettled in the United States, we see Liban struggle to keep hope alive as he waits endlessly for his application approval. In a camp of over 250,000 only about 1,000 refugees are approved to enter the US each year.
“It is so important for us to humanize these stories”, Vittorio said in a recent interview. “Too many people forget that these refugees are people, just like you and me. They have hopes, dreams, and plans for the future. They come here in search of help, hope, and safety. I hope this film makes people see the issue of refugees a little bit differently”.
A worldwide release of Warehoused is planned for June 20th, 2017 -- World Refugee Day. The filmmakers are hoping for a marquee screening event in Washington DC, along with hundreds of smaller screening events in cities and towns across the world. “We want this film to be a part of the movement”, said Vittorio. “People are already talking about the refugee crisis, we need to show them the real men, women, and children who actually experience this every day -- the people behind the statistics”.
