In the Wake of Rio+20, Will Brazil Walk the Talk?
Due to the recent oil and gas discoveries, the World Bank's Sustainable Development Department of the Latin America and
Caribbean Region (LCSSD) anticipates that by 2030 Brazil's growing dependency on fossil fuels will produce 22 percent of
all the CO2 emissions in the region. The Rio+20 conference focused on the environmental challenges that currently plague
the host country and discussed the importance of environmental responsibility in order to sustain other cruical
industries, such as agriculture and cattle ranching, and the protection of the country's water, land, and mineral
supply.

Tourism Stays Strong, Despite Violence in Mexico
Tourism has experienced some setbacks as a result of the widespread and heavily-publicized violence associated with the
Mexican drug war. However following the 15 percent plunge of tourist revenue in 2009, the efforts to revitalize the
industry by the Calderon administration have been successful.
