Plight Of Palestinian Prisoners Continues To Be Raised
UFree- London 15/11/2011
Plight of Palestinian prisoners continues to be raised across Europe by Members of Parliaments and NGOs to pressure the Israeli occupation to abide by international law and the Geneva conventions.
UFree wrote to parliamentarians and human right organisations about a number of campaigns it has been involved in, such as the hunger strike and medical neglect of Palestinians and most recently the detention of Palestinian children.
Liz Lynne is one of the MEP who raised the issue of administrative detention of young Palestinians in the council of Europe, to be told that there was a lack of information about the human right abuses. UFree is compiling profiles of under eighteen Palestinians to present to members of the EU to show the flagrant disregard of human rights taking place in Israeli jails.
Lobbying by UFree led to MEPs such as Ireland's Nessa Childers MEP raising the issue of jailed journalist Samer Allawi with the European Commissioner, Cathy Ashton. Katy Clark MP asked a question on about the hunger strike in the British Parliament, an issue also taken up by other campaigns in Europe and by the German MEP Jorgo Chatzimarkakis.
Questions asked by MPs such as Clark on the conditions of detainees led to the British Ambassador raising it with ministers in Israel.
Communications between UFree and the Foreign Office in United Kingdom explained the steps being taken by the UK government for prisoners, such as access to Palestinian lawyers for detainees, training for Palestinians lawyers on the Israeli military courts and the translation of military orders into Arabic.
UFree continues to provide information to politicians across Europe about the harsh reality of Palestinian prisoners suffering in Israeli prisons.
