Military Approach Will Never Solve The Papua’ Conflict
The recent barbaric attacks and killings of innocent civilians in Puncak Jaya and Nabire regencies and also the intimidation of Muchtar Tabuni who was sentenced to three years in jail for his peace advocacy in Abepura’s prison yesterday will not help the process of peaceful dialogue. On contrary, such crimes against humanity will only seat back the peace process.
Military approach will never solve the current problem in West Papua but it is only creating more violence with devastating effects. “ We call upon the President of Indonesia to directly intervene and punish the persons involved according to the rule of law. President of Indonesia must show to the world that he is very serious with peaceful dialogue”, said Dr. Otto Ondawame, International Spokesperson of the OPM. OPM supports the call for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to be allowed back to West Papua. If the Indonesian government is sincere about trying to improve the lives of the Papua people then it should welcome independent review by the ICRC or the media.
