Appeal to EU to Protect Renewable Energy Investments During December EU Summit
Hamburg, 27 November: “Renewable energy with its huge job and business potential can help to turn the financial and climate crisis into an opportunity,” says the founder of the World Future Council (WFC) Jakob von Uexkull four days before the opening of the WFC EU Office in Brussels. “The planned EU Directive for the Promotion of Renewable Energies provides a safe investment environment until 2020. If the Directive is open for debate again in 2014, as some member states demand, that would be detrimental to the growth of the only alternative to fossil fuel dependency in Europe.”
Prior to the upcoming EU Summit, the WFC opens its Brussels Representation with an evening reception in the European Parliament on 2 December. During his key-note speeches, von Uexkull and MEP Anders Wijkman will provide hands-on concepts to tackle climate change to over hundred decision-makers from EU institutions and civil society organizations.
In addition to feed-in tariffs as the most cost efficient way for large-scale deployment of renewables (WFC online toolkit for lawmakers www.onlinepact.org), the WFC will present its “Supergrid” project. The “Supergrid” would connect Europe, Africa and the Middle East and allow renewables to flow efficiently from where it is abundantly available to where it is most needed.“Powering Europe largely through renewable energy is possible,” highlights von Uexkull, “We have the technical means to implement the supergrid, all it takes is political will!”
The Supergrid will also be the topic at a WFC co-hosted hearing after the UN Climate Conference in Poland on Dec 14-15. The hearing is targeted at Central and Eastern European parliamentarians.
