Terrorist Attack in Islamabad, Pakistan
We condemn the heinous attack on the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad that has left more than 40 dead and many more injured. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Pakistani people, and we are ready to assist in any way possible during this difficult time.
This barbaric attack comes during the month of Ramadan, only underscoring that those responsible have no respect for the principles of their faith. This strike to the heart of the Pakistani capital leaves no doubt as to the intentions of these extremist elements. Their goal is to create mayhem and weaken the institutions of government so that they may operate unfettered while spreading their intolerance. The United States will continue to stand with the Pakistani people and their democratically-elected government as it confronts this scourge.
Among those killed was at least one American citizen; several others have been injured. We are in the process of notifying next of kin and offering our condolences and assistance at this time.
