Ban Calls On Security Council To Keep Updating Its Working Methods
The Security Council’s “increasingly complex responsibilities in the maintenance of international peace and security” means it is vital that the 15-member panel continue to try to improve its working methods, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today.
Addressing an open debate in the Council on the issue, Mr. Ban said the increased responsibilities are occurring as the wider UN faces a surge in demand for its conflict prevention, peacekeeping and peacebuilding activities.
“This makes it essential for the Council to keep addressing issues relating to its working methods, including by implementing the measures set out in the note of the President of the Council two years ago,” he said.
“These measures are a key step in making the United Nations more efficient, effective and accountable in the face of a growing array of new challenges.”
Commending the “considerable progress” made so far by the Council, Mr. Ban said the UN Secretariat has also taken steps to improve its working methods, such as those about enhancing the content and timeliness of the Secretary-General’s regular reports to the Council on various issues.
He also pledged to strengthen cooperation between the Secretariat and the Security Council.
“I appreciate that the members of the Council are committed to interacting with the wider United Nations membership through greater transparency, openness in decision-making and inclusiveness. I consider this pivotal to the way the Council works and is perceived by the international community.”
