Iraq: UN Envoy Persists With Efforts To Promote Dialogue Over Disputed City
New York, Aug 26 2008 6:10PM The top United Nations official in Iraq continues to work to promote political dialogue and national reconciliation across the country, including over the disputed status of the northern city of Kirkuk, a UN spokesperson said today.
Staffan de Mistura, the Special Representative for Iraq, enjoys the full support of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, spokesperson Michele Montas told the press in response to reports of calls in Kirkuk for his resignation.
“On the issue of Kirkuk, he is committed to helping all sides find a mutually acceptable solution,” Ms. Montas added.
The situation in Kirkuk had become more tense and violent in recent weeks, in part because of the discord over proposed electoral laws.
