Fiji to adopt world's postal strategy
Aug 7, 2008 - Fiji will have to adopt the Universal Postal Strategy for 2009 to 2012 following the unanimous decision of the 24th Universal Postal Union Congress currently held in Geneva, Swizterland recently.
The Nairobi Postal Strategy will be implemented nationally and regionally.. Fiji is under the Asia Pacific Postal Administrators Union (APPU). The APPU will ensure that member countries implement the strategy which should result in the gaps in postal sector developments between the developed countries and developing countries are being bridged.
As a UPU member, Fiji was represented at the meet by Interim Chairman of Post Fiji Limited, Brigadier Ioane Naivalurua, Acting Manager, Public Enterprises, Iliesa Lutu and Post Fiji’s Acting Senior Manager Mails, Ms Temalesi Weleilakeba.
The Nairobi Postal Strategy will form the basis of Post Fiji Limited future direction and the company will need to quickly adapt itself to the challenge.
The pillars of the strategy are structured around the following four program-driven objectives for the entire Union, designed to respond to specific global, regional and national challenges:
* Improving the inoperability, quality and network in order to keep postal sector relevant to market and customer needs;
* Stimulating a universal postal services that is adapted to the social, economic and technological environment;
* Promoting the sustainable development of the postal sector and its economy; and
* Fostering the growth of the postal markets and services.
UPU is United Nations smallest agency but, has the largest member of 191 countries with the widest coverage and the reach of the people. However, with the rapid growing information technology and modems of communications has immensely changed the use of postal services is declining. UPU saw the need for member countries to hasten postal sector reforms in order to stay relevant.
The Congress was to be held in Nairobi, Kenya but, was moved to Geneva because of the political unrest earlier this year. However, UPU agreed for Kenya to chair the Congress and the World Postal Strategy be named the Nairobi Postal Strategy to recognize Kenya’s contribution and effort in the 24th UPU Congress.
