Man Who Tried to Kill Himself in Train Collision Gets Life In Prison
Juan Manuel Alvarez, 29, the man who tried to commit suicide by parking his car on the Metro link commuter line in January 2005 will get life with out parole instead of the death penalty.
According to reports, Alvarez was found guilty of the murder of 11 people that were killed on the Los Angeles commuter train as a result of his actions. His conviction came after a two-month trial.
His defense Lawyer had argued that Alvarez had changed his mind at the last minute but was unable to get the car off the tracks in time. The Prosecution argued that he deliberately caused the crash.
Reports also state that a South Bound commuter train hit the Alvarez car. This caused it to the train to derail and crash into a train going in the opposite direction. The crash resulted in 11 people being killed and another 180 people injured.
On Tuesday, the jury decided against the death penalty for Alvarez and recommended life with out parole instead. The judge will take the jury recommendation under consideration and will give the final sentence.
