Anniversary of Sudan's Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) Implementation
Today marks the mid-point for the six-year implementation of interim measures laid out in Sudan's Comprehensive Peace
Agreement (CPA). Three years ago, the Presidency of the Government of National Unity was sworn in, inaugurating the
processes of power and wealth-sharing embodied in the agreement.
The United States supports the full implementation of the CPA as the only way to end the devastating humanitarian crises
and achieve inclusive peace for all Sudanese, including in Darfur.
We applaud the efforts of all involved parties, including the United Nations and international partners, to secure this
historic agreement. However, peace still remains elusive in many areas of the country, especially Darfur, and much of
the population continues to suffer, and violence persists.
We are concerned about the report of attacks yesterday on the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID),
by an unknown armed group. We call on all parties to abide by the ceasefire agreement, facilitate full humanitarian
access to all of those in need, push forward the Darfur political process, assist in the rapid deployment of UNAMID,
permanently resolve the situation in Abyei in accordance with the June 8 roadmap, and commit to free and fair elections
in 2009.
The United States remains committed to the full implementation of the CPA and the pursuit of a prosperous, peaceful, and
democratic Sudan. The CPA is only as strong as the political will of the parties to implement it.
