Kazakhstan joins UN convention on maritime transport of goods
24 June 2008 - Kazakhstan has become the 34th country to accede to a United Nations treaty covering the maritime transport of goods,
the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) announced today.
The UN Convention on the Carriage of Goods by Sea, also known as the "Hamburg Rules," will enter into force for
Kazakhstan on 1 July next year.
The pact, adopted in 1978 at the request of developing countries, sets up a uniform legal regime governing the rights
and obligations of shippers, carriers and consignees under a contract of carriage of goods by sea.
UNCITRAL, which is based in Vienna, works to remove obstacles to international trade by progressively modernizing and
harmonizing trade law.
