With the completion of the formal hand-over of security overwatch responsibilities in southern Iraq to the US, Australian troops have begun the enormous task of packing up their equipment and stores.
Soldiers from the Overwatch Battle Group (West) and Army Force Extraction Team (FET) have used heavy cranes and forklifts to load dozens of vehicles, shipping containers and equipment on trucks for return to Australia.
The Commanding Officer of OBG(W), Lieutenant Colonel Chris Websdane said that with the cessation of patrol responsibilities, the logistics of drawing down Australia’s troop presence in the region was continuing at pace.
“On the logistic side, the Force Extraction Team is working hard to move all essential stores, vehicles and equipment,” LTCOL Websdane said.
Despite the searing temperatures and gusty winds, LTCOL Websdane said the troops remained focused on moving all troops and equipment from Tallil on schedule.
