U.S. Encourages Democratic Dialogue in Bolivia
In light of yesterday’s referendum in Santa Cruz, the United States encourages the Government of Bolivia and the
opposition to return to their dialogue, and to resolve outstanding differences of concern to all Bolivians in a peaceful
and lasting fashion.
We urge Bolivia’s leaders to seize this opportunity to consolidate democracy by promoting reconciliation as they seek to
build a consensus on Bolivia’s future. We call on all Bolivians to reject violence and exercise restraint during this
critical period.
The United States supports the efforts of the Organization of American States, the Catholic Church, and other nations to
facilitate this dialogue, and stands ready to assist. We support Bolivia’s unity and territorial integrity, and are
committed to strengthening democracy and promoting prosperity for the Bolivian people.
