UN tribunal and justice research institute start project to safeguard court's legacy
23 April 2008 - The United Nations tribunal set up to deal with the worst war crimes committed during the Balkan conflicts of the
1990s and the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) have begun a joint project to transfer the
knowledge gained from the tribunal's work to future courts and institutions dealing with the issues.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), with the assistance of UNICRI, will draft a
compilation of its best practices that can then be used by other international and domestic regimes tackling war crimes,
crimes against humanity and genocide, the tribunal said in a press release issued today in The Hague.
The document will include all of the ICTY's expertise on its proceedings, ranging from investigations to the enforcement
of its sentences, and drawing from the work of the Office of the President, Chambers, Prosecution and Registry at the
tribunal.
The manual is due for completion later this year and a digest of ICTY jurisprudence is also being considered for
publication, the tribunal said. UNICRI will organize the publication and distribution of the documents.
