Min Ko Naing - Leading Burmese Democracy Activist May Face Blindness
Min Ko Naing, the well-known '88 Generation student leader and Burmese political prisoner, has been suffering from a serious eye infection for the past three weeks. Min Ko Naing requested a consultation with an eye specialist, but the authorities at Insein Prison in Rangoon - where Min Ko Naing is being held - have refused his request, claiming that an eye doctor will not be available before May.
Sources from inside the prison say that the condition of Min Ko Naing's eyesight is seriously deteriorating to the point that he is unable to sleep or eat because of the pain of the infection.
Min Ko Naing has been one of the most prominent and outspoken opponents of the Burmese junta. The prison authorities in Burma have a long history of using the denial of medical treatment to political prisoners as a form of torture. It is obvious that they are intentionally refusing to provide necessary treatment to Min Ko Naing in order to destroy his eyesight.
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) is very concerned that Min Ko Naing may loose his eyesight if he does not receive immediate treatment, and seeks help in persuading the Burmese military regime to provide Min Ko Naing with the appropriate health care he urgently requires. Please direct your appeals to: Union of Myanmar Embassy, 22 Arkana Street, Yarralumla, Canberra 2600, Australia. Fax: ( 61-2) 6273 4357
