Kaua Explains Ramsi Support To Law And Justice In SI
Assistance from RAMSI Law and Justice Program this year will come in three broad areas as was reflected in the
non-appropriated funds of the development budget 2008.
Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs Toswell Kaua said this in Parliament during the debate of the 2008 national budget
Monday 31st.
First, he said is the Technical Assistance portion, which will see advisors and inline personal provided to justice
agencies, including the office of Director of Public Prosecution, more lawyers for the Public Solicitors Office, Puisne
Judges, Magistrates, and corporate support advisors.
In addition, the Minister said there would be advisors provided to the Deputy Solicitor General, Principal Legislative
Drafter and Chief Crown Counsel Offices.
The Law Reform Commission will have a Legal Policy Researcher and Chief Executive Officer and the ministry headquarters
would have a financial advisor, a Legal Policy advisor and a Planning Officer.
According to the Mr Kaua the second part is infrastructure, which would see the completion of the first stage of the
High Court precinct including construction of a new sheriff's office and registry.
The other component involves the completion of the refurbishment of the Kalala House and the construction of a new court
house and court offices in Auki to start in May this year and to be completed in early 2009.
The third phase will include activities, which would require Law Reform improving access to ordinary people; support to
the back capture unit to collect Solomon Islands case law free online access and support to the ministry's local justice
project, which looks at how the role of traditional leaders can be strengthened to deliver justice to rural communities.
