New Hampshire Legislature Starts Impeachment Hearings
CODEPINK member Leslie Angeline has entered the third week of her fast—Hungry for Justice? Impeach Him Fast—to pressure
Congressman John Conyers and the House Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment proceedings against Vice President Dick
Cheney. Fifty others, from Vancouver, Washington to Kennebunkport, Maine, have joined the fast, with more signing on
every day.
"As a mother, I think of all the Iraqi and American mothers who have lost their children, their husbands, whose lives
have been devastated because of the lies of this administration. I feel we must hold those responsible accountable, and
impeachment is the constitutionally mandated way to do that."
Angeline met with Cong. Conyers on Friday, February 15. While he was deeply moved by her sacrifice and said he has been
getting pressure from people every day, he is still unwilling to commit to impeachment hearings. So Angeline will
continue the fast and encourage others to join. Angeline will sit in Cong. Conyers DC office every day this week, and
will also pressure other members of the Judiciary Committee, including Rep. Bobby Scott, Melvin Watt, Sheila Jackson Lee
and Zoe Lofgren.
Angeline’s fast coincides with an exciting new development in New Hampshire, where the state legislature begins hearings
today on House Resolution 24, calling for impeachment proceedings against Bush and Cheney. The hearings, with expert
witnesses, have been spearheaded by Rep. Betty Hall, 87-year-old, 14-term legislator. "Impeachment is a tool our
constitution gives us. It is like a scalpel to remove a disease in our system," says Hall. "But, like surgeons, we the
people must use it to save the patient. And like the surgeon, we cannot wait." If the impeachment resolution passes, New
Hampshire would join the Vermont Senate and 91 cities in a grassroots call for accountability.
"The call for impeachment continues to grow," says David Swanson of AfterDowningStreet.org. "If we get just three more
members of the Judiciary Committee to come out for impeachment hearings, that will represent a majority of Democrats on
the Committee, which will really turn up the heat on Chairman Conyers. The Impeachment Fast and the new developments in
New Hampshire are helping to build the momentum."
