East Timor President Wounded, Rebel Commander Killed in Attack
The president of East Timor - Jose Ramos-Horta - is undergoing emergency surgery after being shot during a attack by rebel soldiers on his home early Monday.
Mr. Ramos-Horta - a Nobel Peace Prize winner - is being treated at an Australian military hospital East Timor's capital - Dili - after being shot in the stomach.
An army spokesman says fugitive rebel commander Alfredo Reinado was killed when the president's guards returned fire on the attackers. The spokesman said a guard was also killed.
Reinado has threatened in the past to lead his force of renegade soldiers against the government since escaping from prison in August 2006.
He was jailed for allegedly inciting bloody clashes earlier that year between government forces and rebel ex-soldiers that destabilized the country.
Thirty people died and another 150,000 fled their homes from the violence.
Mr. Ramos-Horta and Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 for their resistance to Indonesian rule.
