President escapes unhurt in an attempt on his life
The President has escaped unhurt in an attempt on his life earlier this morning.
While greeting a large crowd of supporters just minutes after his arrival in North Thiladhunmathi Atoll Hoarafushi, a man wielding a knife attempted to stab the President. A fifteen year old Boy Scout standing near the assailant attempted to deflect the attack and was severely injured. The boy was taken to the island hospital for treatment and is going to be flown to the capital Male' for further treatment. The President met with the boy and thanked and praised him for his bravery. The President's personal physician has confirmed that the President received no injuries.
The assailant was apprehended by security officials and is now in police custody and investigations are underway.
Following the attack, the President has called on all members of society, irrespective of political or other differences, to live in peace and harmony: "we should never resort to violence", said the President. The President also expressed his determination not to allow the attack to deflect him from his duties to the people of the Maldives. He will therefore continue with all the remaining stops in his visit.
