Ban Ki-moon names new deputy head for UNICEF
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today appointed a veteran United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) official to help lead
the agency as its Deputy Executive Director.
Saad Houry, a dual Lebanese-Canadian citizen, has been the Director of UNICEF's Division of Policy and Planning since
January 2003, and he is also a member of the agency's Global Management Team, Programme Management Group and Audit
Mr. Houry began his career with UNICEF in 1978, and has served as its Chief of Staff and as Deputy Regional Director in
the Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, located in Jordan.
Fluent in Arabic, English and French, he has also undertaken assignments in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Yemen, Syria
Mr. Houry has also worked for the World Bank and the American University in Beirut.
As the lead UN agency for children's rights, their survival, development and protection, UNICEF is active in 191
countries around the world.
