UN agencies mobilize aid for Dominican flood victims
United Nations relief agencies are providing food and hygiene items in the Dominican Republic, where more than 60,000 people remain displaced following Tropical Storm Olga, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported today.
The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) is distributing food packages and hygiene items to the survivors of last week's deadly storm which killed at least 22 people in the small Caribbean nation.
Meanwhile, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) is providing hygiene items, cleaning equipment and medical supplies.
For their part, the UN World Health Organization (WHO) and its regional office, the Pan American Health Organization, are providing additional staff for the relief effort and are helping with health and sanitation management in shelters.
Last week OCHA estimated that at least 35,000 Dominicans have been internally displaced, while more than 7,500 houses have been destroyed or substantially damaged and 76 communities left isolated. However, the overall impact is thought to be less severe than that caused by Tropical Storm Noel, which struck at the end of October and start of November.
