The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that computer manufacturer Acer will join The Olympic Partner
(TOP) Programme in 2009.
The agreement with the Olympic Movement, which begins on 1 January 2009, positions Acer as the official worldwide
partner in the computing hardware category for the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic Games.
As the current Worldwide TOP Partner in the "computing equipment" category, Lenovo is the official provider for the
Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing in 2008, over 200 National Olympic Committees and their Olympic teams, and the
IOC, until 31 December 2008.
IOC President Jacques Rogge said, "We are delighted that we will welcome Acer to the TOP Partner Programme in 2009. For
the Olympic Movement, this partnership will deliver funding to help stage the Olympic Games in Vancouver and London,
technology and services to manage the logistical demands, and people to staff some of the most critical functions. In
addition, the relationship will play an important role in the promotion of the Olympic Movement and sport across the
globe. I would also like to place on record our thanks to our current TOP partner in the computer equipment category
with whom we are working very closely in preparation for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games."
"The universality of the Olympic Games will exercise a strong influence on us, as it will contribute to gathering people
together beyond prejudices and in full respect of diversity", explained JT Wang, CEO of Acer Inc. "This principle is at
the basis of our mission and commitment to making technology universal and free from any limitation."
IOC Marketing Commission Chairman Gerhard Heiberg added, "All the companies involved in the TOP sponsorship programme
are leading global brands. As a well-known computer equipment manufacturer, Acer will make an important commitment to
support sport and the world's Olympic athletes, as well as the Organising Committees of the Vancouver and London Olympic
"The experience with the International Olympic Committee will bring a fresh and new approach", commented Gianfranco
Lanci, the President of Acer Inc. "It will be like being part of a huge community of men and women who, though sharing
different feelings and emotions, are driven by a common intent to promote an open dialogue built on solidarity and
support. Seen in this perspective, differences become beneficial to all parties, something that is in line with Acer's
objective to build easy-to-use technological solutions that are shaped around real people and real needs."
