Palestinian-Israeli Meeting Cancelled After Checkpoint Stop
A meeting between Palestinian and Israeli negotiators was cancelled Sunday after the Palestinian motorcade was stopped at an Israeli army checkpoint.
Palestinian officials say the motorcade of chief negotiator Ahmed Qorei was stopped on the way to Jerusalem for talks with Israel's chief diplomat, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
The two sides were scheduled to continue work on preparations for a U.S.-sponsored Mideast peace conference.
A spokesman for the Israeli foreign ministry says Israel regrets the incident, and an investigation is underway.
Earlier Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the U.S. conference is a historic opportunity for peace with Israel.
Mr. Abbas made the comment in a speech to tens of thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank city of Ramallah to mark the third anniversary of the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
