Personal Details Of Deceased Soldier In East Timor
Following agreement with his family this afternoon, the Australian Defence Force can today release the name of the Australian soldier who tragically died in East Timor on Monday.
Private Ashley Baker, 19 was posted to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) in November 2006. He was serving with the Timor Leste Battle Group when he died.
A memorial service for Private Baker was conducted in Dili this morning. At the service Lieutenant Colonel Ben James, Commanding Officer of the Timor Leste Battle Group, paid tribute to the young soldier.
"2 RAR has lost a fine soldier, the members of his platoon have lost a good mate, and the Baker family have lost a son and brother. The thoughts of all members of 2 RAR are with the Baker family at this difficult time".
Private Baker's family have requested that their privacy be respected and will not be undertaking any media interviews.
Defence extends its sympathies to Private Baker's family and continues to provide support to them during this difficult time.
