Kyrgyzstan: UN Sends Aid For Quake Victims After Government Appeal For Help
The United Nations is sending $10,000 to earthquake-hit Kyrgyzstan in response to an appeal by the Government for international assistance to provide food, heating equipment, clothing, medicines and construction materials to help victims of the disaster.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced today that it had allocated the cash grant to cover immediate needs.
According to preliminary information received by the Government, housing, electric lines and communications have been damaged and heating is needed for both the homeless and local medical aid centres.
Some 2,400 houses, two medical and obstetric centres, five administrative buildings, nine schools, a kindergarten and a library have been damaged in the Kochkor area of the Naryn region, some 140 kilometres south-east of the capital Bishkek. There is no power supply or phone communication with the affected area.
