Annan Arrives in Kenya to Address UN Climate Change Conference

Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, today to attend the closing stages of the United Nations Climate
Change Conference, warning that urgent action is needed now.
Mr. Annan, who is to address the Conference’s high-level segment tomorrow, met briefly with Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki
at the State House immediately after arriving from Istanbul, where he accepted the report of the High-Level Group of the
Alliance of Civilizations, an initiative he launched last year to tackle fear and suspicion between communities
following a proposal by the Prime Ministers of Spain and Turkey.
In impromptu remarks after his arrival today, Mr. Annan praised Kenya’s relations with the UN, noting that two UN
agencies are based in Nairobi – the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT).
He also spoke of the need for leadership and urgent action to deal with the problems posed by climate change.
