SIS Want Labour Mobility Framework

Leaders of the Small Island States are open to discussions on a proper framework for labour mobility to developed
countries.
In a press conference this afternoon, the SIS incoming chairman and President of Kiribati, Anote Tong said any proposed
labour migration to Australia and New Zealand requires a proper framework and this in turn needs discussion and
dialogues between the parties concerned.
Mr Tong also said to this end the Forum secretariat has also been directed to develop a proposal that would further
investigate labour movement schemes, including guest worker schemes for the Smaller Island States in both Australia and
New Zealand and other developed countries drawing upon the World Bank Report.
"SIS Leaders recognise the need to address the increasing economic and social pressures of unemployment through avenues
such as unskilled labour access to developed countries.
"SIS noted the work of the World Bank in examining economic arguments in favor of greater mobility including both
skilled and unskilled labour," Mr Tong said.
On that note Mr Tong also said that the SIS leaders appreciate the establishment of a dedicated unit in the Secretariat.
The Secretariat is tasked with ensuring that the SIS perspective is represented and that they fully benefit from the
Pacific Plan.
"Leaders thanked New Zealand for funding the Unit and requested New Zealand and other partners to continue to support
the Unit as it provides the much needed in country capacity building to allow SIS to further realise benefits of current
and future regional initiatives."
