Latest Edition Of UN Yearbook Highlights Security Role Of World Body

Increasing global instability and the United Nations’ response to that problem – through its many peacekeeping
operations and political and peacebuilding missions – are extensively covered in the 58th edition of the Yearbook of the
United Nations, released this week.
The authoritative reference book also contains all key UN decisions on an extensive array of political and security
questions, human rights concerns, economic and social topics, legal issues, institutional, administrative and budgetary
matters, and the activities of intergovernmental organizations related to the United Nations, besides the complete texts
of important reports released during the year.
These include reports dealing with improving the world body’s effectiveness in the aftermath of the Iraq war (from the
High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change) and the recommendations from Panel of Eminent Persons on United
Nations-Civil Society Relations for enhancing the role of civil society in the UN.
Besides security-related issues, the yearbook details progress made working towards the Millennium Developments Goals
(MDGs), the analysis of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on how to make the international economy more supportive of more equitable development, as well as the UN's widening
humanitarian assistance.
