Security Council Urges Action To Carry Out Commitments On Cyprus
Members of the United Nations Security Council today expressed support for Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s continued efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem and urged that work begin quickly to carry out recent commitments made by the two sides.
In a statement to the press, the Council President for August, Nana Effah-Apenteng of Ghana, welcomed the agreement that was reached on 8 July by the two sides.
On that occasion, Under-Secretary-General Ibrahim Gambari read out a text comprising a “set of principles” and a “decision by the two leaders” which outlines further steps in the diplomatic effort to resolve the decades-old inter-communal conflict on the Mediterranean island.
The text was agreed following Mr. Gambari’s meetings with Greek Cypriot leader H.E. Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader H.E. Mehmet Ali Talat. The Set of Principles includes commitment to the unification of Cyprus based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation and political equality, as set out in Security Council resolutions.
In today’s press statement, the Council president said the members “call for full implementation of the 8 July agreement without further delay, and urge that work begin quickly.”
The statement followed closed-door consultations during which Mr. Gambari briefed the Council on his July visit to Cyprus and the wider region, as well as developments on the island since. He emphasized the importance of full implementation of the 8 July Agreement and invited the Council to reinforce that message.
