Burundi: UN Development Programme Worker Injured in Grenade Attack

A staff member serving with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been hospitalized in Burundi following a
grenade attack which killed four people, injured numerous others, and prompted a strong condemnation of violence in the
country by officials of the world body.
John Marries Rwangalinde was admitted to the hospital on Sunday with an injury to his arm is injured which the UN
Operation in Burundi (ONUB) reports is not life-threatening.
In a statement, the UN strongly condemned the violence against innocent civilians in Burundi.
The attack took place in the commune Ngagara in Bujumbura, ONUB reported in a press release, calling on all concerned to
respect human life.
Last month, citing “factors of instability,” the Security Council extended ONUB’s mandate through the end of the year.
The mission was established in May 2004 as Burundi emerged out of 12 years of civil war.
