European Union Ban of Hair Colours
The announcement by the European Union of the ban of 22 colours for hair products was today endorsed by the CTFA New
Zealand.
"The colours banned are not used in hair products sold in New Zealand as the have been considered unsuitable for hair
product use by the CTFA internationally for more than 10 years", said Garth Wyllie Executive Director CTFA New Zealand.
We would anticipate that these colours will be added to the list of banned or restricted ingredients under the New
Zealand Cosmetics Groups Standard issued by the ERMA as soon as they have the opportunity to make the necessary
amendments.
New Zealand already aligns its cosmetic regulation largely with the European Union for ingredient restrictions since the
1 July introduction of the Group Standard.
The process of reviewing the now banned colours was assisted by Colipa, the European Equivalent of the CTFA, who made it
clear early on that there was no interest in the use of these colours by the cosmetics industry in hair colour products.
Most of the colours have never been used in any hair product and it was responsible of the industry to support ensuring
that they are not used in the future.
